Explore mechanism and progress of kidney-tonifying method on middle-aged and elderly essential hypertension based on traditional Chinese medicine theory of “tonifying kidney and resisting aging”

Abstract:

Hypertension is a common disease and the most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Lowering blood pressure effectively and stably is the key to reduce CVD. Unlike single-mechanism drugs, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has the synergistic effect of multi-target and multi-mechanism on the treatment of essential hypertension. According to the theory of TCM, kidney essence deficiency and liver-yang hyperactivity are the characteristics and pathogenesis of hypertension. The method of tonifying kidney has a long history in treating hypertension, and it embodies the basic concept ‘treat disease, cure must seek the root cause’ in TCM. The article reviews the clinical studies on various kidney-tonifying methods, explores the mechanisms and summarizes the research progress, to provide reference for the clinical treatment of hypertension with the combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
