Applied Mathematics in Biology

The research of the group of Applied Mathematics in Biology includes modeling, simulation, and analysis of important biological problems arising from neuroscience, cardiovasology, tumor growth, and medical imaging. Aiming to understand mechanisms underlying physiological phenomena observed in experiments, the group’s research focuses on modeling of the biological processes, analysis of data structure and information processing, development of new efficient computational methods for related scientific problems, and investigation of new mathematical structures in biological processes.

The works of the faculty have provided important simulation tools for various scientific problems, such as large-scale neuronal network simulations, data analysis for neuronal network dynamics, and medical imaging. The faculty members have proposed novel mathematical models for important physiological processes, such as the adaptation of blood vessel systems and the dendritic integration of a neuron, which can successfully explain experimental results and aid to design future experiments. In addition, the group has also proposed new mathematical theories for understanding interesting biological processes, such as optimization principles of biological transport networks and compressed sensing principles in sensory systems.
