Overview

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), initially known as Nan Yang Public School, was founded in 1896, and its Department of Mathematics was established in 1928. One example of SJTU’s place in modern mathematics in China is that the first Congress of the Chinese Mathematical Society was held at SJTU in 1935. Its past graduates include Wu Wenjun, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences known for his “Wu class” in topology; Hu Hesheng, another member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Tony Cai, winner of the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies Presidents’ Award; Ling Wen, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Shen Nan Peng, a prominent contemporary figure in venture capital investments.

Over the past decade, the School of Mathematical Sciences at SJTU has undergone rapid development. According to the 2022 subject assessment by the Ministry of Education (MOE), SJTU Math and Statistics are in class A in the national rankings. The most recent major international academic rankings have placed SJTU’s world rankings in mathematics in the top 100 (28 in US News, 46 in QS, and 72 in ESI); further, SJTU was ranked among the top five universities in mathematics in the Chinese Mainland by Times Higher Education.



Outstanding Faculty and High-quality Research

SJTU’s School of Mathematical Sciences is one of the few mathematics departments in China to have adopted an international peer review system in its recruitment and promotion process. Today, the School of Mathematical Sciences boasts a faculty with international reputations, with many young faculty having strong international backgrounds. In the past five years, our faculty has published numerous notable and exciting research results in top academic journals in mathematics and interdisciplinary fields, receiving international recognition. In the past few years, our faculty has published over 200 research articles annually, in major mathematics and science journals such as Acta Math, JAMS, PNAS, CPAM, Duke Math J, and PRL, with numerous designations of best papers, highlighted papers, and featured articles.

In the past decade, the SJTU Department of Mathematics has promoted ongoing growth of its academic programs by recruiting talented faculty at all tiers through various means with support from talent programs at the national, local, and university levels. The School of Mathematical Sciences currently has 118 full-time faculty members, including 13 elected members from national talent programs, 24 elected members from 4 national young scholar programs, 22 Shanghai Overseas Talent Program winners, 4 National and Shanghai Distinguished Teacher Award winners, 5 university chair professors, and 10 foreign faculty members. In addition, the school has about 25 visiting professors, who are world-famous mathematicians such as Profs. Weinan E (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Jean-Pierre Francoise, Jaume Llibre, Claus Ringel, and Henrik Shahgholian. Internationalization has become a distinct feature of the school; in 2014, the School of Mathematical Sciences was among the first four Internationalized Model Colleges affirmed by the National Administration of Foreign Experts and the only one in mathematical science.

Below are a few faculty and research highlights.

1. Led by University Chair Professors Shi Jin (AMS and SIAM Fellow), Congming Li (AMS Fellow), Yuan Lou, Tudor Ratiu (AMS Fellow and member of the Academy of Europe), and distinguished professors Weidong Liu, Yaguang Wang, Dongmei Xiao, and Pu Zhang, our strong research areas include algebra, applied and interdisciplinary mathematics, dynamical systems, geometrical analysis, partial differential equations, scientific computing, probability, and statistics. Prof. Shi Jin was invited to speak at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians for his contributions to mathematical theory and numerical methods for multiscale kinetic equations with uncertainties. Prof. Yaguang Wang was awarded a first-class Ministry of Education Science and Technology Prize for his achievements in the well-posedness theory of the Prandtl boundary layer equations of fluid dynamics.

2. An integral part of mathematical sciences at SJTU is the Institute of Natural Sciences (INS), which was founded ten years ago and has assembled a group of dynamic young researchers in applied mathematics who conduct cutting-edge investigations in applied and interdisciplinary research in areas such as scientific computing, neural sciences, image processing, biostatistics, bioinformatics, data science, machine learning, quantum computing, and fluid dynamics. In the past two years, all the young researchers at INS, numbering more than 20 researchers, have received national young scholars’ awards (equivalent to the Sloan Research Fellowship and NSF CAREER awards in the US). Each year, the INS publishes several articles in major scientific journals such as Physical Review Letters and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, some of which have been designated as best papers, editor’s choice articles, and highlighted papers.



Talented Students and Excellent Education

SJTU has long sought to train the best students and researchers in mathematical sciences. We established the Zhiyuan Honors Program in 2009, which was selected as a Program for Training Outstanding Students in Fundamental Sciences by the MOE in 2014 and continued in 2020. Moreover, the school has received first prize in the National Teaching Achievement Awards. It has established the Student Innovation Center Mathematical Branch and the Zhiyuan Innovative Research Center to organize various research activities for undergraduate students with faculty members as supervisors. We founded the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program (the Wu Wen-tsun Program) in 2018 and are committed to cultivating top-notch talent with solid mathematical foundations, rigorous logical thinking processes, and independent innovation capabilities, as well as inculcating outstanding mathematical modeling, scientific calculation, and comprehensive analytical abilities in our students in applied mathematics and interdisciplinary fields.

Striving to educate students with international perspectives, SJTU has established joint graduate student training programs with Sorbonne University (France), the University of Konstanz (Germany), Oxford University (UK), Moscow State University (Russia), and other renowned international universities. The school has been aggressively recruiting outstanding international students to pursue postgraduate degrees at SJTU.

In 2022, the Establishing a Top-notch Doctoral Student Training System and Cultivating World-class Innovative Talents project won the Special Prize of the Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award. In 2017, the Reform and Practice of Graduate Training System for Global Competence and Innovative Talents project won the First Prize in Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award. The School of Mathematical Sciences has explored approaches to improve and strengthen mathematical training for all students at SJTU, developing 11 Excellent or Showcase Courses at the state or municipal level that are taught in English and five State Excellent Courses and Open Access Courses.

International Collaboration

The School of Mathematical Sciences and the INS, along with other mathematical research platforms at SJTU, are rapidly becoming among the most active education and research centers in mathematical sciences in the world for international collaboration. Each year, we organize over 20 international and domestic conferences and workshops; host more than 300 distinguished lectures, colloquia, and seminars; and invite more than 100 long- and short-term international visitors, including a few who chose to spend their sabbatical leave at SJTU. Our long list of visitors and invited lecturers includes Fields Medalists Alessio Figalli and Cedric Villani, numerous plenary lecturers at ICM, and members of national academies. The MoE’s Network of International Centers for Education (NICE) program has helped recruit over ten foreign faculty into SJTU’s School of Mathematical Sciences.


Research Platforms in Mathematical Sciences

1. The MOE Key Lab in Scientific and Engineering Computing, established at SJTU in 2014, is one of the 11 MOE Key Labs in mathematical sciences in China. It has mobilized a group of active researchers that conduct research in network dynamics in biological systems, multiscale transport problems in sciences and engineering, mathematical theory in multiscale problems, and high performance computing in science and engineering.

2. In 2014, SJTU’s School of Mathematical Sciences was selected as one of the four schools nationwide in NICE, a program by the MOE, and remains the only school of mathematics in China that has been selected for this national program. The aim of NICE is to recruit reputed foreign faculty to work in universities in China. Supported by NICE, the School of Mathematical Sciences has hired over ten full-time international faculty members.

3. The Wu Wen-Tsun Center of Mathematical Sciences, established in 2019 at the centennial of our most prominent alumnus, Wu Wen-Tsun, attracts over 20 postdoctoral researchers each year to conduct research in pure mathematics, mathematics of artificial intelligence, and the history of mathematics.

4. The Center of Mathematical Foundation of Artificial Intelligence, established in 2020, has over 20 faculty members who conduct research in machine learning theory, global optimization, imaging processing, and quantum machine learning

5. The Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics was established in 2020, with subcenters at Fudan University and SJTU. It is one of the first 13 national centers for applied mathematics approved and supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

6. The Shanghai Frontier Science Center of Modern Analysis was established in 2021 and has 43 standing research members who conduct research in the spectral theory of partial differential operator, regularity theory and Liouville theorems in incompressible flow and geometric analysis, and the weakened 16th Hilbert problem.
