A mathematical model of setup planning was introduced based on discussions about machine types, tool approach directions and operation procedure constraints. The setup planning was divided into three subproblems to decrease the problem solution space according to grading for the thinwalled turning part. An algorithm based on rules, graph theory and clustering was introduced to determine setup planning procedure and operation groups in the process of solving the subproblems. A complete setup planning was put forward for the thinwalled turning part. Finally, an example of an aviation part was illustrated to prove the feasibility of the proposed model.
