The School of Design Hosts Forum on the Importance of the Palladio for Design and Culture

On November 20, 2025, an academic seminar on the "Palladio's Cultural and Design Influence" was successfully held at the School of Design. Representatives from the Cultural Institute of the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai and Tongji University visited the School of Design, engaging in an in-depth dialogue surrounding Palladio's architectural heritage and its contemporary value. Dean Ruan Xing, Dean Assistant Chen Dan, Director of the Master of Architecture Program Du Qian, and faculty and student representatives attended the event. The activity was hosted by Ruan Xing.

In his opening speech, Ruan Xing introduced the school's educational philosophy and developmental achievements. He emphasized that the school consistently upholds the concept of "Total Design," and that it has established a comprehensive and interdisciplinary program for developing talent. He noted that the school building recently made the "World's Most Beautiful Campuses List 2025" by Prix Versailles (the only campus architecture to receive the honor in Asia), reflecting the school's pursuit of excellence in design education and practice.

Francesco D'Arelli, Director of the Cultural Institute of the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, gave a presentation titled "Italian Cultural Exhibitions as a Platform for Dialogue," and shared several examples of successful exhibitions. He pointed out that exhibitions are not merely displays of art but also serve as bridges for cross-cultural understanding, and that innovative curation can effectively promote dialogue between Chinese and Italian civilizations.

Professor Aldo Cibic from Tongji University elaborated on the curatorial concept for the special exhibition "Palladio: Geometry and Life." The exhibition will systematically present Palladio's journey from stonemason to master architect through five thematic halls, utilizing the language of innovative spatial design to allow visitors to deeply experience the essence of his architectural philosophy.

The three parties established multiple agreements for cooperation. They will jointly promote the realization of Palladio-themed exhibitions in China and continue to deepen cooperation in areas such as academic research, joint workshops, and the planning of cultural exhibits. This will contribute to the sustained and in-depth development of cultural exchanges between China and Italy.

Before the meeting, the visiting delegation, led by Ruan Xing, toured the school building.
